Studio City Fire Safety Update: New "Zone Zero" Rules

Living south of Ventura Blvd near Fryman or Laurel Canyon or near the LA River? The state's new Zone Zero wildfire rules apply directly to our hillside neighborhoods. Here is what you need to know to stay compliant with the LAFD:

What is Zone Zero?
It is a mandatory 5-foot ember-resistant buffer around your entire home.

Immediate Actions Needed:

  • Clean the Roof: Clear all dead leaves and pine needles from roofs and rain gutters.
  • Move Hazards: Move firewood, plastic trash bins, and lumber away from exterior walls.

Changes Coming Over the Next 3–5 Years:

  • Ditch the Bark: Wood chip and bark mulch within 5 feet of your home must be replaced with rock or gravel.
  • The 1-Foot Rule: Clear all plants within 1 foot of your foundation.
  • Fix the Fences: Wooden gates and fences attached directly to your house will eventually need non-combustible retrofits.

Note for Hillside Homes: If your property sits on a tight lot or steep slope, these 5-foot rules might cover your entire side yard. Don't panic or cut down mature trees yet—focus on clearing immediate debris first.
